Description

Orson Welles’ dramatic anthology series Mercury Theater on the Air, infamous for its Halloween broadcast of War of the Worlds, found a sponsor and became Campbell Playhouse in December 1938. The program continued to feature the charismatic and fiery Welles as both a host and an actor. Classic stories such as Our Town, The Count of Monte Cristo, Mutiny on the Bounty, Showboat, Huckleberry Finn, and Jane Eyre were performed by the likes of Laurence Olivier, Helen Hayes, Burgess Meredith, Jack Benny, Eddie Cantor, and Agnes Moorehead. In addition, the great Lionel Barrymore portrayed Ebenezer Scrooge in Campbell Playhouse’s annual performance of Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol.
Originally Performed on 10/30/1938 w/ Orson Welles
